Road Network
With aproximately 2,600 miles of state highways, county roads,
and city streets, it's no surprise that the road network is the largest form of
transportation in Lane County. Constant time and effort is placed into the road
networks throughout Lane County to maintain smooth and efficient ways of travel. The
following are the seven state highways serving Lane County.
Interstate 5 is the main route for north and south traffic along
the West Coast. It serves the states of Oregon, Washington, California, and British
Columbia.
Highway 36 runs between Junction City and Mapleton. It
provides easy access from the coast to the Willamete Valley.
Highway 58 begins just south of the Eugene-Springfield
metropolitan area and extends to the southeast Lane County border. This route
provides a low elevation pass through the Cascades and feeds into Highway 97.
Highway 99 used to be the major north and south route before
Interstate 5 was built. As an arterial route that runs through the Willamette
Valley, Highway 99 serves several business and rural districts.
Highway 101 is a beautiful stretch of road that covers the
Pacific Coast. Highway 101 is famous for its breath-taking sights of the Pacific
Ocean.
Highway 126 runs from west to east, and border to border in Lane
County. Highway 126 and Highway 99 merge in Eugene and than split again in
Springfield. Highway 126 also serves as Main Street in Springfield which is one of
the the larger business areas in Springfield.
Highway 242, the Old McKenzie Highway, provides a scenic view
through the Cascades. It is closed in the winter time due to snow.
Air Service
Mahlon Sweet Airfield is conveniently located off of Highway 99
just a few miles from dowtown Eugene. The Eugene airport offers jet service to San
Fransico and Denver by United Airlines. Feeder routes to Seattle and Portland are
offered by Horizon Airlines and United Express. Small public airports can can be
found throughout Lane County in the cities of Florence, Creswell, Cottage Grove, and
Oakridge.
