INTRODUCTION

Atlas of Lane County

Integration of Atlas Design and GIS Data

The Atlas of Lane County, Oregon web project was created by Advanced Cartography students (Spring 98 and Winter 99) with support from Lane Council of Governments (LCOG), UO InfoGraphics Lab, and the UO Social Science Instructional Lab (SSIL).

This project provided an opportunity for students to learn map and atlas design and web publication techniques. Each student picked a topic then compiled GIS data from LCOG and other sources into an ESRI ArcView project. The GIS data was then preprocessed and converted from ArcView shape files into Macromedia Freehand using Avenza MAPublisher. Each student designed, and produced a thematic county map with one or more associated web pages containing supporting text and graphics. Microsoft FrontPage was used for web authoring. (see diagram)

The atlas provides a defined sequence of standardized thematic map displays with supporting text, graphics, and relevant web-links that produces a narrative for the user to learn about the county and allows for geographic comparisons between topics.

The web-based Atlas of Lane County also has the potential of serving as a map-based interface/link, and a complimentary publication to the LCOG web-served GIS database, RLID (see diagram - PDF format).
