Winter Term '09 - Office Hours:
I'll be in my office in Condon Hall 175 on Monday and Tuesday from 10-11:30 AM this term (and by appointment).

This page is linked to other sites with additional information about my research and teaching activities here in the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to schedule an advising appointment or need to reach me for any other reason.

Courses and Administrative Work:

I'm working on my research and administrative duties fulltime this term but will be back in the classroom in the spring. I'll be teaching a graduate seminar on "Immigration and National Identity" next term...as well as my annual GEOG 208: "Geography of the United States and Canada" course. Throughout the academic year, I also serve as the Coordinator of the College of Arts and Sciences "Educational Careers Advising Team" (ECAT) and Chair the UO Canadian Studies Consortium.

Research:

I'm a human geographer interested in international migration, the construction of cultural and social landscapes (especially urban landscapes), and race, ethnicity, and place. Currently, most of my work focuses on issues related to immigrants and refugees in the Pacific Northwest. At the present time, I'm deeply involved in a project centered in analyzing the transnational identities, and the migration and settlement experiences of U.S.-born immigrants in Canada.

I also have the pleasure this year of once again working closely with an active group of promising graduate students from Australia, Russia, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Oregon, and beyond. They are engaged in exciting projects of their own on immigration, urban geography, identity, cultural and historic landscapes, and geographic education.

I'm pleased (and relieved!) to report that my four-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) is wrapping up this year. Thanks to the help of close colleagues in the College of Education, our project that has provided "content-pedagogy" support for rural Oregon teachers is in its final year.  Also on the education front, I continue to direct our department's innovative summer MS program for K-12 teachers each year. This program is the only one in the country that provides an opportunity for teachers to complete their master's degree during two summers here in Eugene and online courses completed during the academic year. For further information about this innovative, teacher-centered summer program, check out our EDGE web site and its links to the larger world of geographic education.

Finally, more than you ever wanted to know about my academic experiences, publications, and prior research and teaching efforts (!) are provided on my curriculum vita.

Please feel free to stop by my office if you'd like to discuss research or teaching ideas - or the possibility of becoming a professional geographer.
