Geography isn’t just about knowing your way around a map.

It’s about knowing your way around our ever-changing world.

The Department of Geography at the University of Oregon is one of the top ten geography programs in the country. We feature faculty and students researching and teaching about the cutting edge of important societal issues, such as racism, climate change, water resources, economic development, land use, conflict, migration, spatial data science, cartography, and more. We offer two major programs of study, Geography and Spatial Data Science and Technology and a minor in Geography.

The Department of Geography knows that a safe environment free of hate, violence, and discrimination is the right of every student and essential for learning to happen. Along with the rest of campus, our department recognizes and values our responsibility to protect our environment from hate and discrimination in any form. Resources are available to anyone on campus experiencing or witnessing hate or discrimination at

Geography Commencement Ceremony, June 17th at 12:30pm!

We are ready to graduate our 2018-2019 cohort of geographers! (even if we aren’t ready to say goodbye!)

Please join the department in celebrating our undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students’ hard work and accomplishments in the annual geography commencement celebration. We will send our students out in style, with a ceremony just for geographers!

Come hear award announcements, speeches from Dr. Alec Murphy, newly minted Dr. Aaron Zettler-Mann, and undergraduate Liana Hu! Afterward, please hang out, meet the families, and eat tons of delicious food (and cake!).

Geographies of Adventure featured in AroundtheO

This spring term, Nick Kohler offered a new course in our department called Geographies of Adventure and Active Leisure, which he received funding from the Oregon Humanities Center to develop. This course is online with self-guided field trips and looks at how adventure and outdoor activities shape landscapes. This class is featured in this week’s edition of AroundtheO. Read more here! And congratulations Nick!
