About the Fire & EMS Department:
The organization provides fire suppression and rescue services to an area of slightly more than 100 square miles, containing urban, suburban and rural zones. All transport ambulance service in central Lane County, both emergency and non-emergency, is provided by Eugene Fire and its sister city of Springfield, creating an Ambulance Service Area (ASA) in excess of 2,500 square miles.

The department, which holds a Class 2 ISO rating, is headed by Fire Chief William A. Bass, a 30-year veteran of emergency services, who has held the position since 1990. He oversees the workings of a department consisting of 200 personnel, from an office which directly manages the Administrative Services Division. The other functions of the department are organized into two additional divisions: 1) Field Operations and 2) Technical Services. Each of the organization's functional work units is aided by a skilled staff of administrative assistants.
