Standards

Geography Standard 1: How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.

Washington State Geography EALR 1.1: Use and construct maps, charts, and other resources to gather and interpret geographic information

Procedures

  1. Have students create maps of their routes to school. Maps should include street names, landmarks, and other basic features. You can have students personalize their maps by drawing in the locations of episodes and events from their own lives, such as where they wrecked on their bike as a kid, where they go to hang out, where they like to eat with their families, etc.
  2. Have students take the virtual tour of Guanajuato to see a route to school in Mexico.
  3. Have student compare and contrast the two routes by making lists of the similarities and differences that they see.
