Research Interests:

While my research interests may seem varied, the tying bond is use of space as well as spatial representations.  Within that broad context, my work is focused within behavioral geography, cartographic research methods, and visualization.  I investigate spatial abilities, tasks, strategies, and processes affecting and used in navigational map reading and use.  I employ both behavioral testing methods as well as fMRI in my research.  In addition, I am exploring tactile maps and mapping for the blind and partially sighted.  I am particularly interested in investigating environmental orientation, navigation, and perception as well as effective map design and use.  Finally, I am interested organizational frameworks of visualization, including effective categorization,  implementation, and use.

Spatial Cognition Research Group:

My spatial cognition research group meets once per week.  Students discuss their own current and future research and writing projects as well as related literature.
