Advanced Climatology

Topic:  Paleoclimatology

Winter 2013, 10:00-11:20pm Tu & Th, 206 Condon Hall (CRN 27747 (421); 27748 (521))

Instructor:  Patrick J. Bartlein, 154 Condon Hall, x6-4967, bartlein@uoregon.edu,

Course overview:  Climate varies continuously over time, and the focus of this course is on the history of the climate system on scales ranging from tens of millions of years to decades.  The emphasis of the course is on the what the nature of those variations tells us about the way the climate system operates rather than the specific tools are used to reconstruct past climates.  A secondary emphasis is the role that climate models and syntheses of paleoclimatic data play in “diagnosing” past climatic variations.

Prerequisite:  GEOG 321:  Climatology

Grading:  Undergraduates:  Two exams (40% each) in the fifth and exan weeks of class, and an annotated bibliography (< 10 citations) of a particular theme in paleoclimatology (20%).  Graduates:  Two exams (35% each) (schedule as above), and an annotated bibliography (< 10 citations) of a particular theme in paleoclimatology, accompanied by a short Powerpoint presentation delivered the last week of class (30%).

Texts and reading:  All of the required reading will be available on line.
