Applying to the EDGE Program

** Please not that due to the changes in the EDGE program and the process of applying for a revised program curriculum, we will not be accepting students for the 2017 Summer session. We will start the program in the summer of 2018**

The Department of Geography accepts applications into the masters and doctoral programs for Fall term admission only. Applications should be completed and all materials should arrive by Feb 15th in order to be considered for the summer term. The department will notify applicants of its decision around April 1.

Students must be admitted to the Graduate School at UO in addition to the Department of Geography. To begin, go to the online application through GradWeb and the Graduate School. Make sure that you apply for the proper summer term. The online application will also ask if you are interested in applying for a GE (Graduate Employee) position. If you would like to apply, you may go ahead and do so through GradWeb. If you receive a GE award, you will be expected to act as a teaching assistant to one of our lower-division online courses. You will receive a tuition waiver and a stipend for the term you work.

In order to be considered for the EDGE program, students must compile the following information. Please read the instructions carefully:

1. Statement of Purpose
You should include a two to three-page statement introducing yourself, discussing your current teaching, presenting future teaching interests, and explaining how the EDGE program will help you best meet your career goals. The statement should combine your intellectual autobiography, relevant experiences, and your vision of what you will do in our program and subsequent to your graduate studies.

This statement is the most valuable opportunity to present and distinguish yourself as a qualified individual; thoughtful and carefully written statements provide a better introduction than a laundry list of accomplishments or traits. We are interested in what kind of a geographer you are or want to be, and why it makes sense for you to undertake graduate work with us.

2. Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be requested from three (3) people who best know your academic qualifications. Your referees should know you and your teaching interests and be able to speak to how they have worked with you in the past and your potential for success within, and contributions to, our program. Letters are submitted directly by the letter writers via GradWeb online application. GradWeb will send requests directly to the referees that you specify in your application. This will include instructions for uploading letters to your application file.

3. Transcripts
You will need to submit a copy of your transcript from all institutions from which you took college-level courses.

4. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores
You must submit TOEFL scores ONLY IF you are an International Student or if English is not your primary language.

5. Official transcripts
Prior to acceptance into the graduate program, you need to mail official transcripts from all institutions from which you took college-level courses to:
Office of Admissions
240 Oregon Hall
1217 University of Oregon
Eugene, OR 97403-1217

Please email Dr. Leslie McLees (lmclees@uoregon.edu), EDGE Program Coordinator, if you are interested in applying for the program, have any questions about the process, or if you have sent your materials in.
