2006 Geomorphology Symposium Field Trip
Tentative Schedule
Friday, October 20, 2006
5 Hours
Friday Field Trip: A field trip is being organized by Will Graf to take a 'River Walk' along the Congaree River in Columbia on Friday, tentatively from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. As a 'fall-line' city between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, Columbia has a history of early cotton processing and textile manufacturing based on water power. The Piedmont in the Congaree watershed above Columbia endured some of the most intense soil erosion and gullying in the nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This fascinating history is recorded both in the cultural and geomorphic landscapes along the river. The field trip will be open at a modest fee to all conference participants who pre-register for the River walk. It will leave from the conference site on the USC campus via vans which will shuttle participants to the river. Watch this location for details and photographs of the field trip.
